The Accompaniment Project was founded in 2022 based on an insight from the Synod on Synodality, when Pope Francis asked all the baptized to listen to how we’re journeying together in our faith. When people face challenges without support they are likely to suppress faith and move on. When people are accompanied - by friends, strangers, and even those who do not believe in God - they are able to persevere in their questioning, discovery, and faith.

Sarah-Marie Chan is an entrepreneur encouraging communities to practice deep listening to develop personal faith. She is a leader in product management, development, and design, and has led teams to launch multiple software products, medical devices, and a business.

Sarah-Marie volunteered for the Synod focusing on people who were baptized but not practicing. Her training from Stanford’s d.school in human-centered design and her experience managing a research study relating to emotional wellbeing (funded by pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline) positioned her to do this development work for spiritual wellbeing.

Sarah-Marie is a creator of systems, a speaker, an engineer, and an avid backcountry wilderness adventurer.

“When my commitment to faith began guiding my career and relationship choices, I found that my joy and openness invited others to search for that themselves. We are building a culture where it is safe to share questions of faith and to encourage each other to pursue wisdom and meaning.”
